Campus Dining Services
For House System residents, participating in the residential dining program is one of the fundamental cornerstones of community development. As such, all residents are assigned to a meal plan. Each day, students gather at House Tables to relax, sate their palates, and discuss everything from the foundations of the universe to the day's events, while building House identity. In the dining commons, C-Shop and Hutchinson Commons food court, and cafes UChicago Dining provides an array of cuisines to suit many tastes and appetites.
The Residential Dining Program
The House System's residential dining program provides healthy, well-prepared meals in community-based dining halls via a meal plan that is structured flexibly to help students maintain their active schedules. Dining commons menus change daily to offer a variety of entrees, including vegan and vegetarian options. Saturday dinner is not offered in the dining commons; many Houses use this opportunity to plan House dinners and off-campus cultural events.
House Tables
Each House has a designated "House Table" in one of three dining commons where House members join one another for camaraderie and conversation. Find your House Table.
Dietary Considerations
Kosher ~
There are two dedicated Kosher food service stations at UChicago Dining: Bartlett and South Campus Dining Commons.
Both stations are CRC (Chicago Rabbinical Council) supervised – the laws of kashrut are followed.
There is no surcharge for visitors to visit the Kosher food stations.
The stations are open during the academic school year, not including interim periods and during the Sabbath and holidays.
Campus Dining Services and Housing & Dining Services work together with Hillel to provide meals for the Sabbath (Friday dinner and Saturday lunch) and holidays.
Students may sign up with Hillel to eat their Sabbath meals there (students on a meal plan have their meals covered by the meal plan).
When the South Campus Kosher station is open, they prepare deli sandwiches that are double-wrapped and labeled for sale in the two campus markets: Maroon Market (Bartlett) and Midway Market (South Campus). Frozen Kosher entrees are always for sale in both markets.
Zabiha Halal ~
There are two dedicated Zabiha Halal food service stations at UChicago Dining: Bartlett and South Campus Dining Commons.
Campus Dining Services and Housing & Dining Services work together with the Muslim Student Association (MSA) to determine the menu of food items that are served.
Gluten-Free/Other Severe Food Allergies ~
Increasingly we see more students with gluten intolerance, or actual Celiac Disease, and other severe food allergies.
OUSH works closely with students and Campus Dining Services to develop a plan for each student.
RHs/RAs can also refer residents to the Office of Undergraduate Student Housing for information and assistance.
Specifically, the gluten-free program includes having basic gluten-free food items available at every dining commons (in addition to the food items that already previously existed, e.g. plain grilled chicken breast):
o Breakfast: gluten-free cereals, gluten-free bread with a dedicated toaster for toasting
o Lunch/dinner: rice noodles at pasta stations, plain baked potatoes, corn tortillas
