History

William E. Dodd was a historian of the American South during the 1910s and '20s. George Herbert Mead was one of the most influential thinkers at the University of Chicago. One of the founders (along with fellow Maroon John Dewey, Charles Sanders Pierce, and William James) of the philosophical school of pragmatism, Mead, along the way, invented social psychology and exerted a huge influence on the field of sociology.

Culture

Dodd Mead is an incredibly active and social house. Rumored to be dangerous to other houses, Dodd Mead is in fact fiercely independent and competitive. However, the House makes it a priority to be part of the surrounding community, and both leads and participates in a wide variety of community service events. These include a tutoring program for children of University staff that was founded and is currently run by Dodd Mead House members, regular monthly dinners at a southside homeless shelter, and participation in the quarterly UCSC days of service. The house also loves to participate in the annual winter festival, Kangeiko, and has won the participation award at this event for 6 straight years. We are IHC tug-of-war champions, and have won the Classical Entertainment Society.s annual chariot race two years in a row " both by designing and building the most creative chariots and by winning the race! On the more formal side, Dodd Mead hosts the annual George Herbert Mead birthday dinner each February, to which professors and administrators are invited by students and enjoy live music and toasts by fourth year residents. The house is very active, participating in a variety of intramural sports and often traveling downtown to see movies, eat dinners, or attend cultural events. In the house, residents love to argue about almost anything, and conversation at the round dining table is often wildly varied and highly entertaining. Activities in the House range from year to year according to the interests of the current students and have included everything from a wrestling club to a knitting circle!
