HistorySnell House, the oldest active dormitory on campus, was erected in 1892 with funds donated by Henrietta Snell. That endowment comprised the unclaimed reward money earmarked for the still-unsolved murder of her husband, Chicago turnpike baron Amos Jerome Snell. Originally an all-male dorm, it began life as the home of the U of C football team.its first resident head was Amos Alonzo Stagg, father of modern American football. CultureSnell House maintains the fierce intellectual spirit of the U of C with a diverse body of 54 students. Snell residents tend to be independent, yet the House maintains a sense of community. Students frequently lead their own trips or events in addition to staff-sponsored activities, and participate in House Council meetings, IM sports, and campus-wide activities. Many Snell House activities and traditions are held in conjunction with Hitchcock House, our "conjoined twin." |
