Snell House

History

Snell House, the oldest active dormitory on campus, was erected in 1892 with funds donated by Henrietta Snell. That endowment comprised the unclaimed reward money earmarked for the still-unsolved murder of her husband, Chicago turnpike baron Amos Jerome Snell. Originally an all-male dorm, it began life as the home of the U of C football team.its first resident head was Amos Alonzo Stagg, father of modern American football.

Culture

Snell House maintains the fierce intellectual spirit of the U of C with a diverse body of 54 students. Snell residents tend to be independent, yet the House maintains a sense of community. Students frequently lead their own trips or events in addition to staff-sponsored activities, and participate in House Council meetings, IM sports, and campus-wide activities. Many Snell House activities and traditions are held in conjunction with Hitchcock House, our "conjoined twin."
