Wallace House

History

Wallace house was named after Elizabeth Wallace (1866-1960), one of the original faculty members of the University of Chicago. Professor Wallace taught Romance Languages and Literature and French History, and she was awarded the French Legion of Honor in 1946 for her work overseas during both world wars. Wallace House occupied Woodward Court from its beginning in 1963 until 2002, when it was moved to the first two floors of the West Building of the Max Palevsky Residential Commons.

Culture

About half of the students in Wallace House are first-year students, so the feel of the community can change a lot from year to year. That said, we.re all about food, play, and the life of the mind. We take our work seriously, but we are also always ready to take a break from studying and RSO activities to compete in IM sports, share study break snacks in the lounge, and partake of house dinners or movie nights in the RH apartment.
