Upcoming Breaks
Thanksgiving Break
Residence halls remain open during the Thanksgiving break (Monday, November 20 – Friday, November 24). Students are welcome to remain in residence without requesting permission.
Winter Break
Residence halls are closed for winter break (12 PM, Saturday, December 9 – 8 AM, Monday, January 1). Students are required to make their own housing arrangements during the above period as very limited on-campus housing is available during the break period.
To request on-campus housing for any reason during any portion of the above period, students must submit a formal request through the myHousing portal (myApplications > Winter Break 2023-2024). The request process is currently open and will close at 11:59 PM, Sunday, November 19. Late requests will not be considered.
Students returning to on-campus housing for Winter Quarter do not need to remove all belongings from their housing assignment, rather only need to take those items they require over the break period.
Specific details about winter break closing procedures will be communicated closer to that time.
Bicycle Registration
If you have a bicycle, we recommend registering your bike with UCPD. Registering your bike can assist in the recovery of your bike if it is lost or stolen. More information on registering your bike can be found here.
UCPD will also be tabling in our residence halls to provide an easier opportunity for registering your bicycle.
You may stop by any residence hall on its specific tabling date with UCPD to register your bike!

Public Safety Advisory Council
The purpose of the Public Safety Advisory Council is to foster a collaborative relationship between the University’s public safety programs and the students, academic appointees, staff, neighbors and neighboring organizations that share our community. The Public Safety Advisory Council will provide a formal mechanism for community input regarding issues that impact safety and security on campus and throughout the UCPD extended patrol district. The Public Safety Advisory Council will proactively seek feedback from a diverse group of stakeholders to identify public safety challenges and concerns and will work with the Department of Safety and Security (“DSS”) and the University of Chicago Police Department (“UCPD”) to promote and support community awareness and understanding of the University’s safety and security services. The Public Safety Advisory Council will also provide the University, the DSS, and UCPD with advice and counsel to ensure that the University’s public safety priorities, policies, and operations are informed by community input and feedback.
