Resident Assistants – Applications Due: 2/9

Resident Assistants (RAs) live and work in the 48 Houses that make up Housing and Residence Life. They are central to building supportive, welcoming communities that reflect the educational mission of the University. RAs partner closely with their Resident Heads (RHs) and take on a mix of community, advisory, and administrative responsibilities.

RAs are often the first point of contact for students navigating academic or personal concerns. They offer informal guidance, help connect residents to resources, and support students through everyday challenges. They also plan and lead social, cultural, recreational, and educational activities that strengthen House identity and foster engagement.

Alongside their RH(s) and other Housing and Residence Life staff, RAs help uphold University policies and procedures and serve as informed resources about campus, Hyde Park, and the broader city. Together, these responsibilities make the RA role an essential part of the student experience at UChicago.

Resident Dean Assistants

The Resident Dean Assistant (RDA) plays an important role in each residential hall, supporting the Resident Deans (RDs) in their work with students. RDA responsibilities can include many tasks, but their primary focus is supporting their RDs as they organize intellectual and social events, both within the halls and at off-campus locations, which inform scholarship outside the classroom and support the sense of community within the House system.

RDAs are scheduled to work between 2-12 hours per week during the academic year, with the exceptions of reading periods, finals week, winter break, and spring break. RDAs are directly supervised by the Resident Deans.

To maintain employment, an RDA must be in good academic standing with a GPA of at least 2.0 per quarter. In addition, RDAs must remain in good judicial standing with The College and Housing & Residence Life.

Contact your Resident Deans for more about their expectations for this role, and for application information.

House Orientation Aides

Do you have House Spirit? Is your House something that keeps you excited about attending UChicago? If so, the House Orientation Aide (O-Aide) position may be right for you! House O-Aides serve as the main welcoming group to the residential community, and set the foundation for House culture for incoming new students. This volunteer group of returning students is tasked with becoming familiar with Orientation materials and schedules, and works to assist Resident Heads and Resident Assistants with preparing the House for Orientation Week (O-Week). House O-Aides bring energy and fun not just during move in, but all throughout O-Week. A successful O-Aide should be familiar with common questions new students may have surrounding transportation, fun attractions, campus navigation, and the general management of starting your first year off right.

Students who are active in their houses, attend house meetings and events regularly, have served on House council, and overall look for ways to engage and interact in their community would be ideal candidates!

Application Period: April 7 – 11:59 PM on April 25

PROFESSIONAL STAFF POSITIONS

Resident Head

Very few University faculty and staff roles involve closer engagement with students than the Resident Head (RH) position in Housing & Residence Life. While living in community with students, RHs share in many dimensions of students’ experiences—from the excitement of intellectual discovery and the formation of new friendships to the challenges of homesickness and the process of learning personal limits. It is a position meaningful in scope, requiring a genuine commitment to student engagement, a willingness to live in community with students, and strong time-management skills to balance its varied responsibilities. The Resident Head role plays a valuable part in influencing the University of Chicago House System—helping to foster the character and traditions of one’s assigned residential community, shaping the identity and rhythms of daily life, and contributing to a cohesive, welcoming, and academically engaged student experience.
