FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Below are some of the more frequent questions we receive about on campus housing. If you have a different question, reach out to us via email, telephone (773-702-7366) or though our myHousing portal live chat feature

Housing Applications & Assignments

Can I change my housing application responses after submission?

Most steps of the housing application process remain open and editable until the process closes, allowing you to return and modify many of our responses. Some steps, such as the housing agreement step, may be single use or read-only after completion and cannot be modified or returned to once completed.

I forgot to complete a housing application. Can I still live on campus?

Incoming new students who miss completing a housing application will still be assigned to on campus housing. Unfortunately, we are unable to factor in any living or lifestyle preferences or roommate requests once the process has closed. The housing agreement and move in steps remain open and must still be completed. Returning students who are not subject to the residency requirement and miss the room selection process may select from available housing options in early August. Returning students who are not subject to the residency requirement who miss the Winter or Spring Quarter housing application may email us to discuss available housing options and next steps.

When are housing assignments issued?

Incoming new students will receive an email to their UChicago account on the third Friday in August once their housing assignment details are available. Returning students participating in room selection receive confirmation of their housing assignment details immediately, while assignments made for returning students returning to housing for Winter or Spring Quarters are made on a rolling basis.

How do I change my housing assignment?

Housing assignments are considered final upon determination. Changes are permitted through a dedicated myHousing portal process that opens during the second week of Autumn Quarter and generally closes before spring break. Submission of housing assignment change request does not guarantee a future housing assignment change will occur. Requests are reviewed and processed based on submission date. The ability to offer a new housing assignment is driven by several dynamic factors, including submission date, available spaces, and individual resident housing preferences.

I have a disability and need specific housing accommodations. How do I make this request?

Students in need of specific housing accommodations due to a documented disability or medical condition must make that request through Student Disability Services (SDS). Housing & Residence Life is unable to provide these types of accommodations unless a student has been approved through SDS. To ensure your privacy, please do not send Housing & Residence Life any medical documentation.

Are there gender inclusive or same gender housing options?

All residence halls are mixed gender with the exception of designated same gender floors/sections. Same gender and gender inclusive housing options are available in each residence hall. Gender inclusive housing assignments can be made within any multi-occupancy room, such as a double, suite or apartment, that is not part of a same gender floor/section. Same gender and gender inclusive housing preferences may be indicated within the housing application process.

Students who prefer a gender inclusive housing option are expected to be open to living in the same housing assignment with students of any gender, including: cisgender men and women, transgender men and women, nonbinary, agender and genderqueer. Gender inclusive housing options are a personal choice and not all students may be comfortable with such arrangements. No student will be assigned to such a space unless they specifically express interest. We encourage students interested in gender inclusive housing to discuss their preference with other individuals in their support network, including parents/guardians.

We will begin accepting advance parcel shipments on Friday, September 12. Items arriving prior to this date will be returned to sender. Returning students moving in at the start of Winter or Spring Quarters may send advance shipments once they have received their housing assignment.

Once a parcel has been processed, you will receive an email to your UChicago account notifying you that the parcel is ready for pick up. During the months of September and October, the volume of parcels arriving to each residence hall is very high. This volume may result in a delay between when a parcel arrives and when it’s ready for pick-up. If 48 hours have passed since your parcel arrived and you haven’t received a pick up notification, email housing@uchicago.edu with details about your parcel, including shipper (e.g., UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.) and tracking number.

Bikes may not be stored in student rooms, however each residence hall offers indoor bike storage on a first come, first served basis. Bikes may not be left in storage spaces during the summer or if a student is studying abroad or on a leave of absence. Outdoor bike racks are available throughout campus and a map of these locations can be found here. Bikes left on these racks that are not registered with The University of Chicago Police Department and displaying an identification sticker will be considered abandoned and removed.
