BREAK HOUSING

BREAK HOUSING

Residence halls are closed during the winter break period, which commences at 12 PM on Sunday, December 15, 2024 and ends at 8 AM on Sunday, January 5, 2025. During this period, students are expected to travel home or make alternative housing arrangements. Students are required to vacate their housing assignment prior to the start of the break period and may not return until the residence halls reopen at 8 AM on Sunday, January 5, 2025. Students returning to on-campus housing for Winter Quarter do not need to turn in University-issued keys and may leave belongings in their housing assignment, but must take any items they require over the break as building and card access is suspended during the above period. Students who are not intending to return to on-campus housing for Winter Quarter must completely remove all belongings, clean their housing assignment, return University-issued keys and check out via the myHousing portal when departing. Additional steps students must complete prior to departing for winter break will be communicated during late Autumn Quarter.

Students who intend to continue living on campus for Winter Quarter and have significant need for housing are required to apply and receive approval to stay on campus during the break period. The winter break housing application process typically opens in the myHousing portal in mid-October. Details about this process will be shared closer to the application period. During the break, the only Residence Halls open are: International House, Renee Granville-Grossman Residential Commons and Woodlawn Residential Commons. New students who anticipate needing break housing must indicate this within their housing application, while returning students are expected to select a housing assignment within one of the above Residence Halls during the returning student room selection and/or summer assignment change processes. Very limited, if any, on-campus housing options will be available for students who seek winter break housing and aren’t living in one of above Residence Halls. If options are available for these students, only those with the greatest need, as determined by Housing & Residence Life, will be given priority. These students will be required to relocate temporarily to spaces in the above Residence Halls during the break and relocate back to their academic year housing assignments at the conclusion of the break period.

Students approved for winter break housing will be assessed $1,100.00 to their University account to cover this additional period of housing, regardless of the number of nights spent on campus during the break. Financial aid dedicated to winter break housing is not available. Impacted students are required to coordinate payment for this fee with the Office of the Bursar. During the break period, there are significantly fewer people on campus, and many University services will be limited or non-operational – this includes on-campus dining, which does not operate during the break period. Students approved for break housing are strongly encouraged to connect directly with other campus offices they may anticipate needing over the break to verify any service changes during this period.
