All residence halls close begining on May 31, 2025 at 3PM CDT.
MOVE-OUT PREPARATION
Prevent charges being assessed to your account by reviewing and following the information below.
To aid students and families in planning for end of year move-out, below is a summary of important details.
CLOSING
Students are strongly encouraged to move-out of their Residence Hall within 24 hours of their last final exam. Non-graduating students are required to move out no later than 3 PM on Saturday, May 31 while graduating students are required to move out no later than 3 PM on Sunday, June 8. Students must vacate their Residence Hall on or before their respective deadline without exception. Please make travel plans accordingly, as no move-out extensions are possible.
Failure to properly check out by the above deadline will result in being assessed $250.00/hour until checked out. This charge will be rounded to the nearest hour.
MOVE-OUT ASSISTANCE
Students may have friends and family members come into their Residence Hall to aid them in packing and/or moving out. Individuals coming to assist a student in the departure process must be met and always accompanied by the student they are assisting. If move-out helpers step outside, they will not be permitted in again without the student they are assisting. Students are asked to limit the number of individuals assisting them to 2-3 persons where possible.
PARKING
Parking around each Residence Hall will be restricted leading up to and during the move-out periods to create designated loading zones for move-out. Be mindful of these zones and No Parking signage to avoid ticketing/towing. Due to University Convocation exercises, additional parking restrictions and road closures will be place around campus on June 7th.
STORAGE
There is no on-campus storage available. Students seeking summer storage options must make their own arrangements with a third-party vendor. We recommend students use our preferred storage vendor, UStorage, which offers a convenient, professional, and eco-friendly storage solution. Students are welcome to work with an alternative storage vendor of their choice; however, UStorage is the only vendor permitted to make in-room pick-up and delivery. Students who choose another storage vendor are required to personally meet that vendor to pick up their items prior to their departure, and must also make similar arrangements to meet the vendor to have their items delivered after moving in.
CHECKING OUT
Each student is required to complete all steps on the Move-Out Checklist, including returning all University-issued keys via the designated key drop boxes in each Residence Hall lobby and checking out via the myHousing portal self check-out process. Failure to complete all steps of the check-out process will result in fees being assessed for improperly checking out and/or lock and key replacements. Keys may not be mailed back after checking out.
DAMAGE CHARGES
The most common items students are assessed charges for during the move-out process include failing to properly check out, damage beyond normal wear and tear, missing or damaged University furniture, additional cleaning, and/or not returning University-issued keys. The minimum charge assessed is $25.00. Students residing in multi-occupancy spaces will assume shared financial responsibility, unless the responsible party comes forth. More information about charges can be found here. Rooms should be left broom clean (including the removal of all trash) upon departure.
As part of the check-out process, students should update their permanent mailing address via the my.UChicago portal prior to their departure to reflect their summer mailing address. Students should also update their address for all other pieces of mail (e.g., magazines, newspapers, etc.) and any package deliveries by other carriers (e.g., UPS, FedEx, Amazon, etc.) as mail and parcels cannot be forwarded, nor held for pick-up. Failure to update a forwarding address prior to departure will result in mail and parcels being returned to sender.
