RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT & HOUSING ELIGIBILITY

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT

Traditional (have never attended college previously) students are required to live in on-campus housing for at least their first six quarters of enrollment. Transfer students are required to live in on-campus housing for at least their first three quarters of enrollment. This requirement excludes summer quarters and UChicago-sponsored summer abroad programs; however, UChicago-sponsored academic year abroad programs do count towards fulfillment of this requirement.

REQUESTING AN EXEMPTION

In accordance with The College Catalog, fulfillment of the residency requirement is also a requirement of graduation. To that end, exemptions are limited to significant personal situations and formal housing accommodations due to a documented disability.

  • Students who have experienced a significant personal situation that they wish to have considered for an exemption to the residency requirement must email the College Dean of Students.
  • Students who have a documented disability that they believe requires them to be exempted from the residency requirement must submit their request online to Student Disability Services.

On-campus housing is only available to full-time enrolled undergraduate students in the College. On-campus housing is not available for graduate/advanced degree seeking students, married couples, or families.

HOUSING CONTRACT

All residents are required to review and electronically sign a Housing Contract through the myHousing portal. The housing contract is valid for the entire academic year or remaining period of the academic year (for contracts signed after the start of Autumn Quarter). A student’s Housing Contract is legally and financially binding for the duration of the contract period.

HOUSING CANCELLATION

Students who wish to, and are eligible to, cancel their Housing Contract (have satisfied the residency requirement) should refer to the Cancellation Policy outlined within the contract. Cancellation requests after the designated Cancellation Period outlined in the Housing Contract will only be considered if there has been a substantial change that has created a significant hardship for the student after the Cancellation Period has passed. Students will be required to provide context about their specific situation, may be required to provide documentation to support their request, and may be referred to other University offices as part of their request.

HOUSING POLICIES & DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES

The University safeguards the House communities through policies and procedures. Housing & Residence Life seeks to serve the educational objectives of the University by providing communities which further and enhance individual study. The Housing Rules and Regulations are intended to establish reasonable limits within which the greatest number of residents can work effectively and live pleasantly. These limits help to guarantee the basic rights of all residents to protection from behavior that creates excessive noise, endangers or disturbs other residents, or invites the intrusion of public authorities into Housing.
