ENROLLMENT CHANGES

Enrollment Changes

Residents may experience a change in enrollment during their time at UChicago which may impact their ability to live in on-campus housing. These changes are generally one of the following:

  • Leave of absence (voluntary or involuntary)
  • Suspension (academic or disciplinary)
  • Study abroad experience
  • No further enrollment required (NFER)
  • Graduating prior to Spring Quarter

Housing & Residence Life is notified by other University departments (College Dean of Students, Study Abroad, Registrar) when there is a change to a student’s enrollment status. Often, it may take some time for each department to process a student’s change before that notification is made.

Moving Out

In most instances, any of the above status changes will require the resident to move out of on-campus housing. Once Housing & Residence Life has been notified of the status change, the resident will be sent electronic communication with instructions for moving out. Apart from status changes that take effect at the beginning of the following quarter, residents are required to move out of on-campus housing within 5 business days of the move-out communication date. Move-out extensions beyond this timeline are generally not possible. Students with a status change effective the following quarter are required to move out in accordance with on-campus housing specific dates available here.

U Storage

Storage & Housing Assignment

Residents are not permitted to keep personal belongings on campus while their enrollment status change is active. More details about storage can be found under Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). Specific housing assignments are not held for residents during the period of their enrollment status change.

Graham House

Resumption & Returning to On-Campus Housing

Students are required to submit a housing application to return to on-campus housing after studying abroad or resuming studies after a leave of absence or suspension. The application process will generally open around the mid-point of the prior quarter. Housing assignments are generally made and communicated to students over break periods (summer, winter, spring) for the following quarter. Students returning from a leave of absence or suspension must be approved to resume studies by the College Dean of Students before a housing assignment can be made.

Housing & Residence Life makes concerted effort to consider a individual student housing preferences during the assignment process, however we cannot guarantee a student’s return to their former House, Hall, or to a specific room or room type. All these preferences are influenced by space availability and overall demand for housing.
